Alexandria, VA – Today’s CBS/NYT poll on campaign finance issues buries an important fact, according to the Center for Competitive Politics (CCP), the nation’s leading non-profit dedicated to defending political free speech rights. According to the poll, “Less than one percent volunteer campaign fundraising as the most important issue facing the country.”
“Despite years of misleading rhetoric about political speech, Americans realize there are many more important issues than having politicians pass new laws to protect incumbents and stifle dissent. More than five years after Citizens United, Americans simply view nearly all other issues as far more important than what’s in our campaign finance laws,” said CCP President David Keating. “Spending in campaigns for office is tiny relative to our economy – last year more than twice as much money was spent on advertising in the Super Bowl as was spent on so-called “dark” political speech. The ability of people to speak out on politics is giving voters more choices and encouraging more candidates to run, as evidenced by this year’s large Republican primary field for President. That’s good for our democracy and good for all Americans.”
