SpeechNow.org v. FEC — protecting free speech for the last 2 years

On Monday, March 26, 2012, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling in SpeechNow.org v. Federal Election Commission (FEC), will celebrate its 2 year anniversary. Free speech proponents everywhere, whether aware of it or not, owe thanks to the legislation that opened the door for the creation of the much-misunderstood super PACs. Brad Smith, former chairman of the FEC and founder and chair of The Center for Competitive Politics, offered support today for the decision, saying:

“The SpeechNow.org v. FEC decision greatly increased campaign freedom and has been a tremendous success. The rise of independent expenditure groups made possible by the SpeechNow ruling has increased the information available to voters and increased the number of competitive races.  We are in the midst of a vibrant, alive campaign in which more viewpoints are heard thanks to, in significant part, SpeechNow.  It’s more proof that the First Amendment works.”
