Campaigning for charity

The Associated Press reports an innovative charity fundraiser that involves bidding on access to Elizabeth Edwards on the campaign trail.

The Carol M. Baldwin (mother to actors Alec and William Baldwin) Breast Cancer Research Fund is raising funds by auctioning off special VIP packages such as a walk-on roll on Alec Baldwin’s show "30 Rock" and the chance to play pool with William Baldwin and Chevy Chase at Chevy Chase’s home.

The foundation is also auctioning of bids for a day on the campaign trail with Elizabeth Edwards.  The auction website describes the day:

"Experience life on the campaign trail with Elizabeth Edwards, wife of presidential candidate John Edwards!

Ever wondered what it’s like to run for president of the United States? Now you can find out. The lucky winner of this prize will get to share lunch with Elizabeth and attend a campaign event. Study up on current events and get ready to see firsthand the fast-paced life of presidential politics!

Experience includes one round-trip airline ticket for the winner to travel to meet with Elizabeth Edwards and spend time accompanying her on the campaign trail. Includes the cost of meals, including lunch with Mrs. Edwards, and local transportation for that day."

The starting bid is $2,000 – $300 less than the maximum contribution to Mr. Edwards’ primary campaign.

The Center for Competitive Politics is now the Institute for Free Speech.
