ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Center for Competitive Politics founder and former Federal Election Chairman Bradley Smith will take part in a panel hosted by the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) on Campaign Finance in a Post-Citizens United World, Thursday, Dec. 6th from 3:15 – 4:45 pm in the Washington Hilton’s Gunston Room.
Sponsored by the NCSL’s Redistricting and Elections Task Force, the panel is part of the Fall Forum and is intended to provide both a current look at how money in politics is regulated, and offer attendees a look at emerging ideas on the issue.
In addition to Smith, other panelists includeDelegate Jon Cardin (D, Maryland) as moderator. Cardin chairs the Election Law Subcommittee of the House Ways and Means Committee, and sits on Maryland’s Commission to Study Campaign Finance Law. He also serves as co-chair of NCSL’s Redistricting & Elections Task Force.
- J. Adam Skaggs, senior counsel for the Democracy Program at New York University’s Brennan Center for Justice. The Brennan Center’s Democracy Program seeks to change the ways in which citizens participate in their government by fixing the systems that discourage voting, hinder competition and promote the interests of the few over the rights of the many. They favor reforms that reduce the role of big money in elections.
The intent is to help attendees, mostly staffers in state legislative offices, use some of what they hear to adapt models for campaign finance legislation in their own states.
The Center for Competitive Politics promotes and defends the First Amendment’s protection of political rights of speech, assembly, and petition. It is the only organization dedicated solely to protecting First Amendment political rights.
