David Keating, president of the Center for Competitive Politics, issued this statement in reaction to a report published by Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, on the IRS targeting scandal:

“It is no surprise that a Senator who repeatedly urged the IRS to investigate conservative non-profits now wants to sweep the scandal he helped create under the rug. Senator Levin faces two pending ethics complaints for behavior that put pressure on the IRS and contributed to the IRS’s abusive and unfair treatment of conservative and tea party groups.  Perhaps he hopes to use this report as his defense brief. Its findings stand in stark contrast to previous investigations from credible sources such as the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) because its purpose is to dismiss the evidence of politically biased misconduct at the IRS, not to engage in honest fact-finding.”
